Live Hunt

~Tall Tales~

This is a buck fawn that Bernie and our son found lying in a plowed field while looking for mushrooms. He appeared to be dead. Because I was working on a taxidermy project at home already, Bern thought it might be another good project. When he walked up to it he could see that the poor thing was breathing. When he came home he told me about the baby deer knowing full well I would make him go get it for me to save or stuff. We decided to go check on the little deer about 10 p.m. that evening. The little guy was still laying in the same spot. I barely slept that night knowing he was alone and cold. The next morning we went again to check on the little buck. He was still in that spot so I gently lifted him to his feet. He let out a loud blat and stumbled in to the bushes. I thought for sure his mommy would come back if she heard her baby. Unfortunately they were in an area near a busy road. We figure she had been hit by a car. We had checked the area for any sign of the mother but there were only tiny hoof prints in the soft dirt around the entire field where the little guy had wondered around looking for his mommy. Once again we went home leaving him all alone in the bushes. By 10 p.m. that evening I could not bare to leave him there another night. We also had a bad storm coming before morning. The little deer surely would have died that night. I sent Bernie with a duffel bag to get the little deer. Bernie said when he lifted the little guy in to the bag he thought it was dead. When he got home he told me not to get upset that he didn't think it was going to live.

I had a bottle of pedilite( a liquid used to prevent dehydration). I forced him to drink some of that. After two hours of feeding he finely stood on his own. It wasn't long before he was tearing apart our room. Three days later he was to much to handle in the house so we packed him back in to the duffel bag ( which wasn't as easy as getting him in the bag that first night.) He was all legs and quite loud. We took him to a deer farm where they have plenty of room for him to run. If you find a baby deer they drink regular WHOLE MILK!

We visit him from time to time. We will keep you posted!
